Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a question that isn’t answered below, please get in touch. I’ll be happy to discuss any aspect of the support I offer during a free, confidential 20-minute introductory consultation.

Do I need to stop drinking before contacting you?

No. You do not need to stop drinking before getting in touch. In fact, many people contact me while they are still drinking but are beginning to question their relationship with alcohol. My role is not to tell you what to do or judge your choices. Together, we’ll explore your goals and work towards changes at a pace that feels realistic and achievable for you.

Can you help me if I don’t want to stop drinking completely?

Yes. Many people come to me because they want to reduce their drinking rather than stop altogether. My approach isn’t about imposing a particular goal—it’s about helping you decide what you want to achieve and supporting you to get there safely and realistically.

How do the sessions work?

Sessions take place online using secure video calling, allowing you to access support from the comfort and privacy of your own home. Each session lasts around one hour and is tailored to your individual needs, goals and pace. Together we’ll explore your relationship with alcohol, identify what’s getting in the way, and develop practical strategies that fit your life.

Are the sessions confidential?

Yes. Everything we discuss is treated confidentially and with respect. There are a small number of legal and professional exceptions where I may need to share information if there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, but wherever possible I would discuss this with you first.

Is this counselling or therapy?

No. This is a professional alcohol support service based on Social Work Theory and Motivational Interviewing. Rather than providing counselling or psychotherapy, I work alongside you to help you explore your goals, strengthen your motivation for change and develop practical strategies that work for your circumstances.

How many sessions will I need?

Every person is different, so there isn’t a fixed number of sessions. Some people achieve what they want in a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. We’ll review your progress regularly and agree together what feels most helpful. There is never any obligation to book more sessions than you need.

How much does it cost?

Sessions cost £65 for a one-hour appointment. I also offer a free, confidential 20-minute introductory consultation, giving you the opportunity to ask questions, discuss what you’re looking for and decide whether the service feels right for you before making any commitment.

Who is this support suitable for?

This service is for adults who want to change their relationship with alcohol, whether your goal is to cut down, stop drinking or simply better understand your drinking. You don’t need to have reached crisis point or be completely ready to change. If you’re beginning to think things need to be different, we can start from there.

How do sessions take place?

All sessions are held online using a secure video platform, allowing you to access support from the comfort and privacy of your own home. You’ll receive joining instructions before your appointment, and all you need is a reliable internet connection and somewhere you can talk confidentially.

What if I need to cancel or rearrange an appointment?

I understand that plans can sometimes change. If you need to cancel or rearrange an appointment, please give as much notice as possible. Full details of the cancellation policy will be provided when you book your first session.

What if I’m in crisis or need urgent help?

Take Control Alcohol Support is not an emergency or crisis service. If you feel you are at immediate risk of harm, or unable to keep yourself safe, please call 999, attend your nearest Emergency Department, or contact your local NHS Mental Health Crisis Team or NHS 111. If you’re unsure whether this service is suitable for your situation, please get in touch and I’ll be happy to advise.
